Dome Forest Walkway

The Dome Forest walkway consists of an advanced walk with an extended tramping track for those who feel adventurous. It is a state track to a lookout and then once you have climbed up to the lookout you then have to climb down. The Dome Cafe is located at the base of the walk and is ideal for a treat at the end. The track is located just off State Highway 1 just before your arrival into Warkworth travelling North from Auckland city.

Where: Warkworth - Matakana Rd

Time taken to walk: 45 min

Special Features: Origional Lime Kilns with signs to re-tell the history.

Accessibility: Center of Warkworth begins in carpark. Cellphone service throughout the walk.

Skill Required: Beginner

Dog Friendly: Dogs may come but must remain on leads to protect nativa Kauri

Step Count: 4800 steps

Distance:

The walk begins at the Dome Forest cafe car park. Immediately you will encounter steps which lead you deeply into the hills. The first leg of the walk leads through a forest where all the New Zealand native plants are labelled so you can point them out for yourself. It is suggested that you stay on the track because the Dome walkway crosses sacred land to local Iwi. You are also at risk of spreading diseases to New Zealand's rare native Kauri. The first part of the walk ends at the top of the hill. You will find a lookout with views of the forest and the buzzing highway. Once you have reached the lookout you have the choice to retrace your steps back to the car park or continue on your journey through the Advanced Track. The advanced track requires a good pair of walking shoes as it consists of thin tracks through muddy paths. This part of the track is not very clear so we recommend you turn around after the black and white tower (highest point if the mountain).
